Cartoon

After the sketch has been approved and any changes have been made, the next step will be the “Cartoon”. This is a full size drawing of the final design that then becomes the work drawing for the fabrication of the window. This cartoon or the sketch will be used for the glass section, which is the careful assignment of a glass color and texture for each piece of glass in the window.

The cartoon is then traced onto thick pattern paper with each piece having a pattern number and a glass identification number. These thick paper patterns are cut with special pattern shears that cut out a very narrow strip of paper which will be where the lead
came goes between the glass. These patterns are sorted according to glass color number and are ready to be used to precisely cut the glass.
